• Reagent for converting amines to other compounds
  • Production of other nitrogenous organic compounds

Sodium nitrate is used in medicinal cases to a very limited extent. You can find it in eye drops. However, this compound is usually used as a control mixture, not as a parent material. This application is due to the inhibition of nitrogen, which is needed in eye drops. In 2005, the National Institutes of Health reported that low nitrite concentrations prevent the damage associated with heart attacks. The team compared the effects of nitrite and saline or nitrate control treatments. Nitrate is chemically similar to nitrite, but it cannot be converted into nitric oxide in the blood, and it does not have the property of dilating blood vessels like nitrite.
