Sodium nitrite solution is an oxidizing agent. It reacts with reducing agents to produce heat and products that may be gaseous (which creates pressure inside closed containers). The products themselves may be capable of further reactions (such as combustion).
Sodium nitrite is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula NaNO2. It is a white to slightly yellow crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water and is hygroscopic. From an industrial point of view, the most important salt is nitrite.
